The Capital City Market is a wholesale food distribution and warehouse district in northeast Washington, D.C. now being planned for redevelopment that will transform the aging district into one of the city’s premier “Smart Growth” neighborhood centers. The Market’s many unique assets—its historic buildings, access to Washington’s METRO Red Line and proximity to the renown Gallaudet University—will make the area standout as one of Washington’s truly unique destinations.
As the planning and design consultant to Gallaudet University HB / a+p is playing an instrumental role in formulating a vision plan for the project that fundamentally connects the revitalized Market district with the historic campus initially designed by Fredrick Law Olmsted. In April 2008 HB / a+p facilitated a series of planning workshops through which the Gallaudet community, planners, city officials and the project’s developers are envisioning a vibrant new urban experience—a new marketplace, new campus improvements and new academic programs.
